Case Study: Restoring Connectivity Overnight

When Connectivity Fails, Productivity Stops

In modern construction, internet access is as vital as power tools and machinery. From project management software and digital blueprints to site safety checklists and live communications, the ability to stay online keeps every operation moving smoothly. Yet, when that connectivity fails — especially in a remote region — entire projects can grind to a halt.

That was exactly the situation faced by a major construction site in the heart of Monaghan earlier this year. Project managers, engineers, and tradespeople suddenly found themselves cut off from essential systems. Their mobile hotspots had failed, network coverage was non-existent, and the team’s productivity was at risk.

In this case study, we explore how Microtel responded to an urgent call for help — flying to London, securing a Starlink Business system, and restoring full connectivity before sunrise. It’s a story of speed, precision, and commitment to keeping Ireland’s infrastructure projects online.

The Challenge: A Remote Site Without Access

The construction site, located in rural County Monaghan, was part of a large-scale development involving multiple trades and a complex management structure. The team relied heavily on cloud-based platforms for scheduling, procurement, site drawings, and reporting and was used to more urban areas.

When the internet dropped out completely one Thursday morning, everything from timecard and payroll submissions to safety updates stalled. Mobile hotspot backups couldn’t pick up a signal strong enough to run even the most basic system.

“It wasn’t just inconvenient, it was literally mission-critical,” recalls one of the project managers on-site. “We had deadlines tied to subcontractor milestones, regulatory inspections scheduled, and coordination meetings with London consultants over Teams. Without internet, the site couldn’t function.”

Attempts to troubleshoot locally failed. The nearest ISP couldn’t offer an immediate solution, it was 7 weeks to get connectivity to the site, and time was running out. Every hour offline was costing the client productivity and potentially delaying the project timeline.

Microtel’s Rapid Response: From Ireland to London and Back

At 11:00 a.m., the site manager called Microtel’s emergency response line. The situation was assessed immediately by our technical team, who confirmed the rural nature of the site made 4G 5G or fibre connections unfeasible in the short term.

The only reliable option? Starlink Business, a satellite internet solution capable of delivering high-speed, low-latency connectivity anywhere in the world even the middle of Monaghan.

However, Ireland was facing stock shortages for Starlink Business units at the time. With no local inventory available, Microtel made a decisive call: we would fly to London, collect a unit in person, and deliver it the same day.

By 2:30 p.m., a Microtel team member was airborne on a delayed Aer Lingus Flight EI166 to London Heathrow. Logistics coordination was handled by Dublin HQ in real time. The Starlink Business kit  pre-configured, licensed, and ready for deployment was secured by 5:00 p.m. local time.

The return flight landed in Dublin at 8:20 p.m., and by 9:48 p.m., the system was hand-delivered to the Monaghan site.

Installation and Activation: Internet by Sunrise

With time being the ultimate constraint, our team  began installation immediately. The Business-level Starlink system was mounted with a clear sky view, powered by the site’s existing generator setup, and integrated into a Microtel-managed network router to ensure security and load balancing.

Despite the darkness and cold conditions, the setup was fully completed by 2:00 a.m. A full connectivity test followed, confirming download speeds exceeding 200 Mbps and latency under 30 ms — exceptional performance for a satellite connection.

By 6:00 a.m., as the first crew arrived, the site office was online, able to process Site Sign Ons for HAS, and BCAR, an induction for trades.

Project management dashboards, procurement systems, and safety tracking apps came back to life. Video calls resumed. Emails synced. And the Monaghan project temporarily paralyzed only 24 hours earlier was fully operational once.

Technical Overview: Why Starlink Business Was the Game-Changer

Unlike standard residential setups, Starlink Business offers higher throughput, priority bandwidth, and a ruggedized hardware design suited for extreme or remote conditions. For construction environments where downtime costs can exceed thousands per day, it provides a level of reliability previously unachievable in rural Ireland.

Key specifications that made it ideal for this project include:

  • Up to 350 Mbps download speeds
  • 20–40 ms low-latency performance
  • Dedicated priority traffic routing for business continuity
  • Multi-user support, ideal for site offices, contractors, and remote access devices
  • IP-rated hardware that withstands dust, rain, and fluctuating temperatures

By pairing the Starlink hardware with Microtel’s enterprise-grade firewall and network security configuration, the site not only regained internet access but gained a robust, scalable digital infrastructure for future phases of work.

Human Impact: More Than Just Internet

What made this case remarkable wasn’t just the technology — it was the people behind the operation. The Microtel team worked around the clock, crossing international borders and coordinating logistics, customs, and on-site setup in less than one day.

For the construction team, this intervention meant more than restored access — it meant saved schedules, protected budgets, and reduced stress across multiple stakeholders.

One subcontractor put it succinctly:
“We were dead in the water. You guys didn’t just deliver a box; you delivered our ability to keep going.”

Lessons Learned: Preparedness, Redundancy, and Partnership

This experience underscores three vital lessons for any organization managing remote or rural projects in Ireland and beyond:

  1. Redundancy is critical.
Every construction site relying on digital tools should have a backup network plan — ideally a secondary connection or preconfigured mobile failover.
  2. Rapid logistics save projects.
Partnering with a provider capable of physical deployment, not just remote support, can mean the difference between hours and days of downtime.
  3. Satellite connectivity is no longer the future.
Starlink Business has revolutionized how remote teams stay online, and Microtel’s expertise ensures seamless integration into existing IT infrastructures.
