In 1991, two engineers with a shared passion for technology began building personal computers from the ground up in a small Dublin workshop. There were no glossy showrooms, no venture funding just a broken table covered in circuit boards, spare parts, and ambition. From those humble beginnings, Microtel was born.
Our first clients were local secondary schools across Dublin, where we supplied and maintained custom-built PCs. It was an exciting time, Ireland was just beginning to embrace the digital age, and Microtel was there at the very start, helping teachers and students take their first steps into computing.
As the technology landscape evolved, so did we. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, Microtel expanded into internet services, software reselling, and on-site IT support. These were transformative years with long hours, steep learning curves, and constant adaptation. We learned what it meant to grow a business not through easy wins, but through persistence, integrity, and technical mastery.
Along the way, we had the privilege of supplying and servicing some of the world’s leading tech companies as they set up their European headquarters in Ireland – including Wang, DEC, Microsoft, Lotus, and Creative Labs. Supporting these pioneers taught us what true enterprise reliability means, and it set the foundation for our own growth into a trusted provider.
The world changed again with the loss of AOL and Bulletin Boards to the internet, rise of cloud computing, mobile workforces, and high-speed connectivity. While many traditional IT suppliers faded away, Microtel reinvented itself, shifting from hardware and break/fix support to cloud integration, enterprise solutions, structured cabling, and enterprise networking.
Over three decades later, we’re proud to remain 100% Irish-owned, still guided by the same hands-on ethos that started it all. We’ve grown from a two-man operation into a national technology partner serving businesses in hospitality, healthcare, finance, education, and beyond.
Our story isn’t one of overnight success, it’s been one of resilience, innovation, and a belief that every connection matters. From the first cables we crimped to today’s high-performance networks linking Ireland to the world, Microtel has always been about one thing: connecting people, places, and possibilities.
To deliver reliable, future-ready connectivity that empowers Irish and international businesses to thrive in a digital world.
We design, build, and support high-performance networks that keep organisations online, secure, and connected — from the smallest local enterprise to the largest multinational campus.
At Microtel, every cable we install, every configuration we fine-tune, and every call we answer reflects one mission: to make technology invisible and performance effortless.
1. Reliability
Our clients depend on us — and we never take that lightly. We engineer uptime into every design and respond when others can’t.
2. Integrity
From the first quotation to project handover, honesty and transparency are non-negotiable. We believe long-term partnerships are built on trust.
3. Innovation
Technology never stands still — and neither do we. Microtel invests continually in training, tools, and new methodologies to stay ahead of change.
4. Resilience
After more than three decades in this industry, we’ve weathered booms and busts, outages and breakthroughs. We know that adaptability isn’t optional — it’s survival.
5. People First
Our technology connects people — but it’s our team who make that connection meaningful. Behind every system we deliver are skilled engineers who care deeply about what they do.
Microtel was founded in 1991 in Dublin, Ireland, by Aodhan Mac Éinrí and John Kane who began building personal computers for local schools, after rebranding Comtech.
Microtel provides network design, structured cabling, connectivity, WiFi infrastructure, support, POS, hardware, software, professional and managed IT services to businesses across Ireland.
We work with clients in hospitality, healthcare, finance, education, bars, restaurants, food service, manufacturing and more, delivering secure and resilient network solutions.
Yes. Microtel remains a 100% Irish-owned private company.
Our primary service location is across Ireland, although we provide services where and when our clients need them. We have supported clients operating in Dubai, the UK and mainland Europe.
When we started back in 1991, our goal wasn’t to be the biggest or the loudest. We just wanted to help schools, businesses, and communities stay connected in ways that made life easier. That same purpose still drives us today.
We’ve seen technology change completely over the decades, but our values haven’t. We still show up when the connection drops. We still take the late-night calls from clients when there systems go down. And we still believe that trust, integrity, and service matter more than sales targets.
For us, every project from installing networks in remote sites to delivering a replacement laptop is about solving problems for real people, not ticking boxes.
That’s what makes Microtel different. The bottom line is we build technology with heart and we keep people connected when it matters most.
